Chris Greenacre: A True Tranmere Hero

Chris Greenacre: A True Tranmere Hero
Many people questioned Brian Little's tenure at Prenton Park especially when he left the club narrowly avoiding relegation to League Two. To add to the poor league position he left the club in, he also left the squad looking fairly bare. One legacy which Brian left for Tranmere however, was Chris Greenacre. Plucked from Stoke's right wing where he was used as a make shift replacement after being dogged by injury, Little brought the then 27 year-old to The Rovers as a striker who not every fan had heard of. Little did Greenacre, Little or the fans know that he would turn into a legend of the club.

In his first season, he startled everyone from fan, to director and probably himself in bagging 18 goals for the club despite the poor league position. This included his first hat-trick against Yeovil Town.

Once Little had departed, Ronnie Moore came in and Greenacre went further than he had with Little and scored 19 goals. Now it was Moore's time to prolong this fairytale marriage between Tranmere and a goal scorer by putting a two-year extension on Greenacre's contract in the '06/'07 season.

The '07/'08 season started off well too, with Greenacre scoring against the team he supported, Leeds United on the opening day of the season. This game set out a foot-print for what the rest of the season should have been like with Greenacre being able to be a striker instead of trying to be the catalyst for the team and allowing Shuker and Davies to pepper him with ammunition with which to fire at the goal. However, we all know what was to come with injuries ruling out both of Tranmere's wing men, which cut off Greenacre's supply some what. This did not however deter the marksman from weighing in with double figures for Tranmere Rovers and by finishing the season with 14 goals to his name, he became Tranmere Rovers' top goal scorer for a third consecutive season and thus equalling John Aldridge's record.

Not many people would bet against Greenacre surpassing Aldo's feat and with some fit wingers of Shuker and Davies' quality, who would bet against Greenacre registering 20 goals?

Even if Aldo's feat is not beaten by Greenacre, he will always be remembered by Tranmere fans and will always be a hero and a legend in his own, deserved right.
