Tranmere Rovers 0 - Huddersfield Town 2

Prenton Park

14/12/2010

Attendance:

Rhodes double sinks Tranmere's Wembley dream

Two goals in each half from Jordan Rhodes ended Rovers cup run in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at the Northern semi-final stage.

The away side spent most of the game sweeping up and clearing balls that had been knocked down by the Rovers attack- with the high ball preventing the likes of Dale Jennings really getting into the match.

The long balls being played made defending quite difficult for the centre back pairings, with The Terriers using this to their advantage to take the lead on 17 minutes when a clearance was flicked into the path of Rhodes by Alan Lee, with the former Ipswich man spotting Gunnar Nielson off his line to lob the keeper from outside the area.

Huddersfield second came from a counter attack on 67 minutes, with Lee crossing across the six-yard box for Rhodes to double the lead on 67 minutes.

The Whites had a few chances to get back into the game at just one down, with Huddersfield keeper Alex Smithies even saving a Lateef Elford-Aliyu penalty on 55 mins. But a dominant display from former Rover Anthony Kay and his back line saw Rovers chances of getting back into the game fade away.
