Manager Ronnie Moore has said we conceded too many silly goals in our three one loss to Sheffield United.
Not the perfect way to see out the footballing year of 2013, defensive issues once again and a loss that leaves us in 20th place in the league, and the gaffer more than appreciates this and clearly knows where we need to improve in 2014 and presumably that will require movement in the market come January.
Speaking to the Official Site following the match Moore said that in our preparations for the game it had been made abundantly clear that their biggest strength came from set plays so the focus was on not giving too many of them away during the 90 minutes and then dealing appropriately with the ones that would naturally come along - and on both scores we failed spectacularly in his mind.
'We gave away so many soft ones early on. The goal, after seven minutes, the defending was awful. Evan has got to do better and stop the lad from turning.'
It wasn't all doom and gloom for the gaffer, but there are clearly issues that need addressing and defensively has been the highlight, well lowlight, all season.
'I thought we grew in confidence and had a nice 20 minute spell where we passed it and Lowey chased a ball down and did everything right.'
There was one opportunity where Moore thinks he'd have been better squaring the ball but he appreciates strikers are strikers and the good ones are selfishly inclined when they feel confident so he can't criticise him for that, but at half time he felt we had a chance and had worked well enough to get ourselves back into the match.
But in the second half we went suicidal again.
'They hadn't got out of their half in the second second half, then we got done on the counter attack, it was suicidal from us.'
The biggest disappointment for the gaffer is he knows in training and after matches the very same things are being said about our defensive displays - almost without question - and we are giving away so many silly goals where we can, should, but aren't, doing better in the moment and it continues to cost us almost on a game by game basis.
Another blow is that Moore revealed he now expects Danny Holmes to be out for us to a month following his substitution following injury which has turned out to be an adductor strain, and he also doesn't expect he'll be able to extend the loan of Liam Ridehalgh.
